Maybe you know Marsha Stevens
because she wrote a song you love, or because she came to your church to
do a concert. Maybe you know her because she's written theme songs for
every MCC General conference since 1985 or because she's paid for
someone from your church to be on a recording with her.
|
Stevens became the first (and as of 2002, the
only) major singer in the contemporary Christian
music subculture to identify herself publicly as
a lesbian…Christian Century Magazine has said
that Stevens became "conservative Christianity's
worst nightmare - a Jesus-loving,
Bible-believing, God-fearing lesbian Christian."

WHAT WE ARE
The Grace and Lace Letter is a Christian publication for
transgendered persons. Our motto is "where Charity and Love
Prevail ...." In keeping with our motto, we will not publish
material bashing any transgendered or Christian person or group,
nor will we publish any ad hominem argument. We hope to bring
the message of God's unconditional love and forgiveness, as
shown to us once and for all by the saving life, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ, to our transgendered brothers and
sisters. We welcome personal testimonies, teachings from God's
Holy Scriptures, prayers and poems and hymns, cartoons and
humorous stories, accounts of events affecting Christian
transgendered persons, and messages of hope and inspiration. Our
goal is to praise and worship God and bring His healing love to
His children.

Hope Notes

Hope Notes - Affirms, supports,
and encourages LGBT persons for who they are! By email, HopeNotes provides a regular
source of affirmation, encouragement, and support for lesbian, gay bisexual, and
transgendered persons and their family, friends, and allies! INSPIRATION - While
HopeNotes DOES NOT intend to limit is words of hope to those from the Christian tradition,
it was words from Christian scripture that were some of the initial inspiration for
beginning this special emailing group. They stand as a beacon of hope for gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons who endure the intense struggles and
hostility of a culture that often is against them. They bring a bright light
to the dark, lonely closets that many sexual minorities face in our churches, schools,
workplaces, neighborhoods, and homes. |

ABOUT US
The Progressive Christian is an
independent religious magazine of commentary, news and reflection. It is
published bi-monthly by the Boston Wesleyan Association, chartered in
1864 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a not-for-profit publisher
of religious materials. Its predecessor publication, Zion's Herald,
founded in 1823, was at the forefront of the 19th century
Social Gospel movement and a pioneering witness to progressive
Christianity throughout its distinguished 183-year history.
The Progressive Christian is unrelated to any
official body of the church and therefore enjoys total editorial freedom
as a responsible voice in the world of mainstream religious journalism.
The editor is Stephen Swecker, a religious journalist and editor
recognized nationally for more than a quarter of a century for his
writing, editing and photographic abilities. Mr. Swecker lives and works
in North Berwick, Maine. |
|

An essential challenge for progressive Christianity is to define our
values based on the Christian values actually taught by Jesus and
preserved in the Bible and tradition. What we all tend to do, both
fundamentalist and progressive, is find support for our own cultural
prejudices in church and scripture. We need to reverse this trend. We
need to base our values in Christ and not in Culture. And that is the
essence of the progressive tradition.
As progressive Christians we need to focus on communicating these
Biblical values our values, the Christian values that we are founded
upon. We also need to be teaching those values, as a priority, to our
children as well as clarifying them for our adult members.
What are those values? They include: compassion, tolerance, justice,
love or charity, faith (meaning trust in a Creator and Creating God),
forgiveness, peacemaking and hopefulness.
At a time when much of what is proclaimed in the name of Christianity
polarizes our society and Christianity itself, there is a need for both
passionate and scholarly voices of compassion, tolerance, justice, love
and to present their views, share them with others, and enjoy vibrant
dialogues regarding theological, political, and social issues.

Since 1917, The Witness has been
examining church and society in light of faith and
conscience - advocating for those denied systemic
power as well as celebrating those who, in
theologian William Stringfellow's words, have found
ways to "live humanly in the midst of death."
Though we are independent publishing organization
unaffiliated with the institutional church, we have
deep Anglican roots. We were founded by Irving Peake
Johnson, Episcopal Bishop of Colorado, and our
corporate name is the "Episcopal Church Publishing
Company" (ECPC). We provide a depth of analysis on
spiritual questing and theology in practice, always
ready to hold our own cherished beliefs and
convictions up to scrutiny.
The Witness has served for decades as the
communications and organizing vehicle for
progressive Episcopalians in the U.S., and in more
recent years, in the international Anglican
Communion too. Historically, this ministry was
conducted through our print magazine. Currently, we
are published exclusively in an online format,
although we do continue to produce some print
products. Our web-based publishing reaches thousands
of worldwide readers through a free email
newsletter, and our articles, editorials, and news
coverage come from writers across the globe.

Welcome Home! That is, welcome to my home page. I hope you'll
put your feet up on your computer (so to speak), feel
comfortable, and make yourself at home. That's the essence of
the spiritual life, in my view — to understand one's self as
welcome in this universe and beloved by God. So browse my pages
as you might the pages of a magazine on your coffee table. Check
out my photo album, my stack of books, my calendar, and read a
little of my life story, which may be similar to your own. And
don't forget to pet Calvin the dog! |

Queer Take

Queer Take - Rev. Irene Monroe - My column is an
integration of African American, gender, queer and religious studies. As
an religion columnist I try to inform the public of the role religion
plays in discrimination against LGBT people. Because homophobia is both
a hatred of the other and it’s usually acted upon ‘in the name of
religion,” by reporting religion in the news I am to highlight how
religious intolerance and fundamentalism not only shatters the goal of
American democracy, but also aids in perpetuating other forms of
oppressions such as racism, sexism, classism and anti-Semitism. My
audience is not only LGBT people, because as a theologian I also write
outside of that hermeneutical standpoint. |
