Family Issues

Our Mission: To engage, connect, and empower people to make the world a better place for children of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender parents and families.

You mean I'm not the only one?!!

Welcome to Families Like Mine, a web site dedicated to decreasing isolation for people who have parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), and bringing voice to the experiences of these families.

This site was created by Abigail Garner, a lifetime advocate for LGBT families because she comes from one herself. She is the author of the new book, Families Like Mine: Children of Gay Parents Tell It Like It Is (HarperCollins).

This site is intended for adults and mature teens, but not young children. (Abigail speaks directly to teens at: "When I was Your Age...") In addition to providing resources for LGBT people and their families, FamiliesLikeMine.com is also for our allies. Regular visitors to this site include students and employers who are looking for ways to build more inclusive environments on campus or in the workplace. Other visitors include journalists, therapists, and researchers seeking information on LGBT-family issues.

So what should you do if your child is gay? You can't turn your back on them. You love them too much for that. But how can you accept something about them that your church, your family, your friends and possibly even yourself finds unbearable, immoral or indecent?

If we are successful with this website, you will find the answer to this challenging question. It is our prayer that our efforts will keep you from losing your child.

--- Patti Ellis

is a voice of informed straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people who have chosen to love and support our relatives and friends by working to spread truth about homosexuality. Our focus is on young people because they generally feel so desperately alone.

About Advocates for Youth

Mission

Advocates for Youth is dedicated to creating programs and advocating for policies that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates provides information, training, and strategic assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the United States and the developing world.

AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth & Families is a national non-profit membership organization. We were established in 1994 to give voice to the needs of women, children, youth, and families living with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

AIDS Alliance:

  • creates and shares information about programs that work for women, youth, children, and families affected by HIV and AIDS
  • provides a forum for consumers and care providers to build more effective partnerships
  • advocates for public policies that benefit women, youth, children, and families affected by HIV and AIDS while preventing new HIV infections and searching for a real cure.

AIDS is the worst epidemic humankind has ever faced. The virus infects 14,000 people every day, leaving millions of people suffering and having a devastating effect on the world's most vulnerable:

     •  More than 14 million children worldwide have been orphaned because of AIDS. That's the equivalent of every child under five in America with no one to watch over them.

     •  Nearly six million children have been killed by AIDS. That number is more than every child in every grade school and high school in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Miami and Atlanta combined.

But, there is cause for hope. Three important catalysts are spurring a strong world response to this epidemic. Political leaders in many countries are increasing their support to AIDS efforts. More resources in the global community are being applied to areas struggling with the virus. And, medicines improve every year, allowing many to survive with the disease and inhibiting new infections.

Your contributions help the organizations that ensure these efforts continue, with the end goal of wiping out the disease entirely: the UN created the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS (UNAIDS), which is dedicated to advocacy for global action on the epidemic and the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Since January 2002, The Global Fund has mobilized, managed and distributed funds to help fight this epidemic.

You can be a huge part of the global solution. Make a difference. Please help

Because I am
... A gay resource for
everyone
Welcome

My name is Jeff, I'm 24 years old, and I'm gay. This website is an accumulation of my writings and letters regarding my experiences and feelings that came from growing up gay in an anti-gay world. Almost all of the writings on this site were done when I was 16 and 17, very few are recent. At the time of this site's creation I was disappointed in the lack of useful information online about real gay issues, and I was even more disappointed in the way the information was presented, so I gathered everything I'd written about growing up gay, and links to gay pages I found valuable, and put them all here. Online erotic stories are not really very helpful, unless you want tips on how to jump your next pizza man, or if you suspect your best friend is going to randomly throw himself on top of you, or if you think you may be staying late in the locker room. Furthermore, I didn't care too much for websites that rainbowed every inch of the screen - the huge oscillating rainbow backgrounds that burn out your retinas, and cartoon male genital navigation buttons that only succeed in making gay people appear mentally challenged, and I won't support that. For the past five years this site has been online, and for the most part it has accomplished what I set out to do, and that is to let gay teens (even gay adults who are struggling with their sexuality) know that they're not alone. Most of all though, I wanted to show everyone that you can be gay and happy, accepted, loved, and successful in life, and that coming to terms with your sexuality in no way impedes your quality of life. You'll find it does quite the contrary.

The goals of FreeToBeMe.com:

  1. To give young people tools for understanding same-sex attraction.
  2. To give young people who experience unwanted feelings of same-sex attraction the resources to address those feelings in a constructive way.
  3. To help young people who know someone who experiences same-sex attraction to respond to that person with understanding and respect.
  4. To provide resources for those who work with youth.

Health Initiatives for Youth

Health Initiatives for Youth - HIFY's youth/adult partnership has taken a leadership role in the battle against adolescent HIV and the many health needs of young people. On the national, state and local levels, HIFY is an active participant in establishing public policy and building systems of care and services for at risk and HIV positive youth.

Just Say Yes is about helping teens to develop a  positive attitude towards sexuality -- gay, straight, bisexual or whatever. It's about saying "yes" to sex you do want, and "no" to sex you don't. It says there's nothing wrong with you if you decide to have sex, and nothing wrong with you if you decide not to.

You have the right to make your own choices, and to have people respect them.

Sex is enjoyable when everyone involved is into it, and when everyone has the information they need to take care of themselves and each other.

About our language: We chose words for this guide that we use when we talk about sex with our friends. We're not doctors and we don't pretend to be, so pardon our French!

The resources listed on this web site are for educational and informational purposes and are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always discuss treatment options with your health care professional that specializes in HIV.

The QYAT - Queer Youth Action Team's mission is to decrease the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in Contra Costa County by decreasing homophobia in the local schools.

Scarleteen - Sex Education for the real world - While we at Scarleteen do not hold to the notion that telling teens to go have sex is a better solution, we strongly feel that belying judgment and furnishing them with the facts they need to know REGARDLESS of whether or not they are sexually active readies them to learn to make their own choices, and develop their own systems of ethics and values from themselves and their families is our job as educators and sex-positive advocates. One cannot make a decision from a position of informed consent without being informed.

Welcome to an amazing charitable organization that is dedicated to saving young lives. During this 25th year (AIDS was discovered 1981) of the pandemic, there are many efforts around the world trying to curb the spread of HIV. Everyone involved in these efforts should be applauded for their hard work and commitment to helping save the human race from this deadly, preventable viral disease.

However, TeenAIDS is different from all the others. We are committed to saving young teenage lives first. We are the only organization whose Executive Director is volunteering 100 percent of his time to this mission. We are the only charity that provides the best and most extensive website on the Internet to educate young people. We have volunteers in over 80 countries who do their work selflessly for their peers and countrymen.

Please read about Dr. John, the PeerCorps volunteers, our staff and the Boards that provide needed assistance in delivering the medically accurate facts that prevent the premature deaths of the younger generation of the world.

A nonprofit endeavor created by the makers of TREVOR to promote tolerance for gay and questioning youth, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group. Statistics have shown that gay teens are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.  The project hopes, through its efforts, to prevent some of those tragedies from occurring.

Welcome to our new home.

A selection of useful pages aimed at young people who may be questioning their sexuality in the difficult period of adolescence. These pages are intended to help young readers understand emerging sexual feelings, and the addition of many personal stories sent in to us from young gay and lesbian people, means there is a wealth of useful information to relate to.

YouthResource, a Web site created by and for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) young people 13 to 24 years old, takes a holistic approach to sexual health by offering support, community, resources, and peer-to-peer education about issues of concern to GLBTQ young people. YouthResource has four focus areas: health, advocacy, community, and issues in our lives.

Welcome to the most complete Internet Resource on

Gay and Bisexual
Male suicide problems!

related issues, and a little known concept related to youth suicide.

The evidence indicates that homosexually oriented males account for more than half of male youth suicide problems, but mainstream suicidologists generally continue to ignore this aspect of the problem. Information about lesbian youth suicide problems is included, as is other generally unrecognized factors possibly associated with youth suicide problems.

It is hoped that your exploration of the site lead to positive outcomes for the ongoing victims of the traditional Better be Dead Than Gay social ideology. Unfortunately, many professionals  have had a history of abusing, harming and/or ignoring these young individuals. They have also been ignoring the high risk status of many other adolescents targeted for abuse in schools and elsewhere because they are "presumed to be homosexual," usually on the basis of gender nonconformity.

Welcome to 'Being gay is okay!': a website run by myself, Jason, to offer advice, information and support to young gay people.

You might have heard negative attitudes about homosexuality. Maybe you're having a tough time coming to terms with being gay or with other people's intolerance toward you. Whatever your situation, I hope that you will find the information and reassurance on this website that you are looking for.

Maybe you don't feel it right now, but hopefully soon you'll realise that being gay really is okay.

  3. fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), Home of The Harvey Milk High School, believes all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential. Operation Respect - Don't Laugh At Me - A non-profit organization working to transform schools, camps and other youth organizations, into more compassionate, safe and respectful environments. Founded by Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, the organization disseminates educational resources that are designed to establish a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict upon each other by behaviors such as ridicule, bullying and-in extreme cases-violence.

It is a unique organization that provides a gateway to broad scale adoption of school-based character education as well as social and emotional learning (SEL) programs.  Toward this end, Operation Respect developed the Don't Laugh at Me (DLAM) programs, one for grades 2-5, another for grades 6-8 and a third for summer camps and after-school programs.

All of the programs utilize inspiring music and video along with curriculum guides based on the well-tested, highly regarded conflict resolution curricula developed by the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) of Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR).

"(In The God Box) Alex Sanchez evokes the crucifying experience of adolescents wrestling with their sexual identity and their identity as Christians. He does a remarkably faithful job of opening up long-abused biblical passages often used as proof texts to denigrate homosexuality. This book is a gift not just to teenagers, but to those who love and work with them."

The Teens and Twenties Group has it own unique role: to provide a safe place in the Online Christian community where gay, lesbian, and bisexual people in their teens and twenties can gather to have fun, develop friendships, and dialogue about issues related to faith, especially as it relates to sexual orientation.   Unfortunately, there aren't enough places like this in the Christian community, and we would like to do our part to fill in the gap. We have this mailing list, and we will meet in AOL chat rooms for group discussions.

It is a place where basically, the unloved of this world, can come and get love and support from their peers, and hopefully soon their friends.

Hi. My name is Sean Miller and I am the webmaster of this page. I just want to give a quick intro. This page is for Transgendered Teens or people who have just started their transition.

If you think that the content of this page is offensive or just not for you, please leave. This page is not for people to critisize. Don't sign my forum or my guestbook if the only comments you are going to give are crude and immature. That is greatly appreciated.

Youth Gender Project is a youth-led organization working to empower and advocate for trans, gender-variant and questioning (TGQ) youth. We address the challenges facing TGQ youth primarily in the San Francisco Bay area by creating, implementing and collaborating on programs to meet the needs of our community, and by educating those who work with us.
