Answers to Your Questions About Sexual Orientation and Homosexuality

The mission of the Association for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues in Counseling is to educate mental health service providers about issues confronting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) individuals. We believe that all individuals should be free to develop their full potential regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, and that professional counselors must understand the unique ways gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered individuals experience inequality and injustice resulting from discrimination and prejudice.

About Us
CatharsisOnline.net
is a website designed to address the mental health needs of those living "Alternative Lifestyles", which might include those in the Transgender, Transvestite, those on the "Down-Low”, AND those of you who have loved ones who are, or whom you suspect may be, living any sexually alternative life style

FOR YOU: Catharsis provides you with confidential counseling with highly trained, experienced and licensed professionals who are available to you day or night. You may choose to have us refer a professional for you bases upon how you define your situation. Alternately, you may choose to “Build A Therapist”, by designating attributes and qualifications you would like to see in YOUR optimal counselor. You can choose among traits such as gender, sexual identity, race, general age range, experience or credentials and general geographic region. We will then do our very best to match you with that counselor.

FOR YOUR LOVED ONES: Catharsis provide your spouses, parents, children or any loved one of someone living any sexually alternative lifestyle with a supportive and understanding ear. These professionals can assist loved ones in understanding and hopefully accepting and supporting the choices made by someone living an alternative lifestyle. May be it is ambivalence, maybe it is a sense that there are secrets being kept , maybe there is shock, guilt, disappointment or confusion over a choice, or why a choice has been made to hide that part of identity. Catharsis can help loved ones not only understand and cope, but also work with the loved one to discover how it is affecting the loved one’s life – and find a way to open locked doors to renewed and profound love and respect for the loved one.

Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues

What is Sexual Orientation?
“Sexual orientation” is a term frequently used to describe a person’s romantic, emotional or sexual attraction to another person. A person attracted to another person of the same sex is said to have a homosexual orientation and may be called gay (both men and women) or
lesbian. Individuals attracted to persons of the other sex are said to have a heterosexual orientation. Sexual orientation falls along a continuum and individuals who are attracted to both men and women are said to be bisexual. Sexual orientation is different from gender
identity, which refers to the internal sense of whether one is male or female. Sexual orientation is a relatively new concept. In fact, although same sex behavior has always existed, the idea of a homosexual identity or a homosexual person is only about 100 years old.

The concept of sexual orientation refers to more than sexual behavior. It includes feelings as well as identity. Some individuals may identify themselves as gay lesbian or bisexual without engaging in any sexual activity. Some people believe that sexual orientation is innate and fixed; however, sexual orientation develops across a person’s lifetime. Individuals maybe become aware at different points in their lives that they are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

HBIGDA - Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, Inc. - Minneapolis -  a professional organization devoted to the understanding and treatment of gender identity disorders. We have approximately 350 members from around the world, in the fields of psychiatry, endocrinology, surgery, law, psychology, sociology, and counseling.

Institute for Marital and Sexual Therapy - Our mission is to provide our clients with   personalized, and professional up to date information enabling quick resolution of issues.

The National Sexuality Resource Center gathers and disseminates the latest accurate information and research on sexual health, education, and rights. Through active outreach to advocates, academics, researchers, policy makers, and diverse communities, NSRC initiates constructive dialogues—both online and face-to-face—on sexuality to promote social justice and improve the quality of life in the United States.

PARAPHILIAS -- Greek for "beyond normal"

TRANSVESTISM - Obtaining sexual arousal or gratification from dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex.

CROSSDRESSING - Simply wearing the clothes of the opposite sex.

The Society for Sex Therapy and Research is composed of a broad range of professionals who have clinical or research interests in human sexual concerns. SSTAR's goals are to facilitate communications among clinicians who treat problems of sexual identity, sexual function, and reproductive life, and to provide a forum for exchange of ideas between those interested in research in human sexuality and those whose primary activities are patient care.

RIK ISENSEE LCSW San Francisco - I often use a focused approach to practical goals in psychotherapy; however, some issues lend themselves to a more open-ended exploration, where you can reflect on your life and clarify what's really important to you. There may not be an immediate problem to solve, but you'd like to get a clearer sense of how you're feeling and what you want out of life. The rest of this section provides an overview of my approach to individual therapy.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues:
I help gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients cope with issues such as "coming out," bi/trans/homophobia, family, relationships, transitions, sexual identity and gender. My personal experience of bisexuality informs my therapeutic alliance with my bisexual clients.
