Welcome to the Gay Games!

Built upon the principles of Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best™, for more than 20 years the Gay Games have empowered tens of thousands of LGBT athletes through fellowship and friendly competition.

Thank you for your interest in the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA).

Gay tennis has been a steadily growing phenomenon beginning in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in Dallas, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. A loosely organized circuit grew beginning in the 1980’s with tennis tournaments consisting of 30-60 players. The GLTA was formed on July 4, 1991 to provide rules and standards in addition to player rankings for all gay and lesbian tennis tournaments.

The Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance is the international organization that manages and sanctions the gay tennis circuit around the world. There are 40 gay and lesbian tennis clubs around the world that comprise the GLTA. With over 39 annual GLTA-sanctioned tournaments in the U.S, Canada, and Europe, the GLTA is the fastest growing gay sports organization. An estimated 5,500 players will take part in GLTA tournaments over the next year, and the number of tournaments and players grows each year.

The GLTA is an organization consisting of independent tennis organizations. An organization must be a GLTA member before its tournament can be sanctioned. Any tennis club wanting to become a GLTA Member Organization or any current GLTA Member Organization renewing its membership must complete and sign an application each calendar year. You can request an application by sending an email to the GLTA Secretary at secretary@glta.net.

International Front Runners is an affiliation of GLBT running/walking clubs that have organized in many of larger cities around the world. Inspired by Patricia Nell Warren's novel The Front Runner, the first FrontRunner club began in San Francisco in 1974, and other FR clubs quickly began forming in the United States then in Canada and abroad.

International Front Runners took a major step in becoming a more formal body by drafting and adopting a Mission Statement and Constitution at our International Front Runner Forum in September 1999.

There are currently about a hundred Frontrunner clubs around the world and they are as diverse as where they are situated. Some of the clubs have hundreds of members, some startups only a few. Many include walkers, not just runners, and at least one club has many more walkers than runners. Some of the clubs elect officers, have bylaws and a membership dues structure, many don't. Most have regular weekly runs/walks and many also get together at local restaurants after their runs. And the fact that there are three different spellings of the name -- FrontRunners, Front Runners and Frontrunners -- is just a further example of the clubs' diversity.

“We want to give athletes an opportunity to share their experiences. Our goals are twofold: One, create a community of gay athletes who can communicate with each other regularly. Two, help cultivate an environment in sports in which athletes are accepted and respected without regard to their sexual orientation. In the process, we help to create positive role models for the society at large.” – O. Mac Chinsomboon, Executive Director

Sports Complex is a biweekly column about GLBT athletes and sporting events. Not only for jocks and sports fans, the column also looks at the "complex" relationship many gay people have with athletics. Written by Jim Provenzano, an accomplished writer and medalist in wrestling, Sports Complex focuses on the growing global community of participants in Gay Games and other events that break down stereotypes, and explores the taboos surrounding gay athletes in professional sports. Whether examining adults enjoying amateur sports, or accomplished college and pro champions facing discrimination, Sports Complex provides a queer take on jocks - in and out of the closet and the locker room.
