WHO WE ARE… Asylum Research is a national organization that monitors and documents gay refugees and the unique problems they face seeking political asylum in the United States. We assist gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered people, individuals living with HIV and their representatives. We are not a legal organization but we have experienced the very process of seeking asylum ourselves. We offer pre-legal assistance. We want to help people understand the hurdles (legal, personal, psychological) involved in attaining asylum in the United States. We have interviewed more than 300 refugees who have been granted political asylum in the US in the past few years. |
Challenging Discrimination Against Gays and Lesbians in U.S. Immigration Law by Lavi S. Soloway former national coordinator, Immigration Equality |

Immigration Equality is a national, grass-roots organization that fights for equality under U.S. immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals. Founded in 1994, as the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, we have grown to a membership of 10,000 in cities all over the country. We are run by a Board of Directors, and have full-time staff in our National Headquarters in New York. Immigration Equality is funded by donations from our members as well as generous support from private foundations. |

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and people living with HIV from around the world seek to enter this country for all the same reasons that other people do. They may be looking for economic opportunity, to be with loved ones, to pursue an education or to obtain medical care. But they sometimes come up against unfair immigration policies. Lambda Legal challenges these policies and pursues Impact litigation Precedent-setting cases designed to affect large numbers of people and bring about meaningful social change on behalf of LGBT and HIV positive people seeking asylum because of persecution in their country of origin. |

The National Center for Lesbian Rights is committed to helping overcome the immigration hurdles faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender immigrants. U.S. immigration law unfairly discriminates against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and people with HIV and/or AIDS. Since 1994, NCLR's Immigration Project has provided free legal assistance to thousands of LGBT immigrants nationwide. Through our national intake service, as well as through free monthly clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area, we help LGBT immigrants understand visas, asylum claims, and the HIV exclusion. NCLR also provides direct representation to LGBT immigrants in impact cases and individual asylum claims. In addition, NCLR provides assistance to private attorneys representing LGBT immigrants in proceedings before the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Federal Courts of Appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court. |

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Immigration Stories – A Collective WisdomWe wish to know more about and conduct research on the challenges and experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender immigrants. Story telling as an educational tool is a wonderful thing. So what we are proposing is to putting out requests that give the identified population a chance to share their stories and putting them together to create a collective wisdom. Our reason for approaching the subject in this manner is to give a nurturing space for creating community and access to information that will support others during a time that could potentially by one of the most stressful and difficult transitions in their lives. If you or someone you know has an interest and are willing to share your/their story please post it here or email us. Also, feel free to share this information with other organizations or individuals that may be interested. |
