Third Wave is a feminist, activist foundation that works nationally to support young women and transgender youth ages 15 to 30. Through strategic grantmaking, leadership development, and philanthropic advocacy, we support groups and individuals working towards gender, racial, economic, and social justice.

Third Wave is led by a board of young women, men, and transgender activists striving to combat inequalities that we ourselves face as a result of our age, gender, race, sexual orientation, economic status, or level of education. By empowering young women and transgender youth nationwide, Third Wave is building a lasting foundation for young feminists around the country.

Financial Aid for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Students

FinAid maintains a very strict privacy policy. It does not retain any log files of individual accesses and deletes all server log files on a weekly basis.   This section describes a number of scholarships available to lesbian, gay and bisexual students. These scholarships offer a variety of criteria for eligibility. This is not an exhaustive list of all the possible sources of scholarships.  If you're a lesbian, gay or bisexual student, you should also call the colleges that interest you and ask if they have a LGB Resource Center. The resource center should have information about any local LGB awards.

Mission

The Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity.

We are a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and supportive heterosexual humanitarian service agency. Rainbow World Fund’s mission is to promote GLBT philanthropy in the area of world humanitarian relief. RWF provides a united voice, a large visible presence, and a structure to deliver GLBT charitable assistance to the larger world community.

The Rainbow World Fund works to help people overseas and in the United States who suffer from hunger, poverty, disease, oppression and war by raising awareness and funds to support existing relief efforts around the world. RWF accomplishes this by working in the GLBT community educating people about world need. Along with raising our community’s consciousness, RWF raises funds to support humanitarian relief projects. We partner with international relief agencies to support successful existing projects. By doing extensive research, RWF develops partnerships with the most effective organizations that best reflect our guiding principles: Empowerment, Sustainability, Peacemaking, Measurable Impact and Ecological Awareness.

Scholarships and Grants

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students are sometimes embraced by their families from the moment they come out as sexual minorities. Many parents and guardians however, react initially with shock, disappointment or anger. Some recover from their initial responses and build an even closer relationship with their teen than ever. Sadly, other times, teens are denied long-promised support for their higher education or even banished from their homes to live through the kindness of friends or on the streets. A growing number of organizations want to provide financial support for college bound students, whether they have been thrown away by parents or they just need extra help to complete their education.

NOTE:
Many of these grants are for youth involved in social activism, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some are also for students with GLBT parents, again regardless of the student's orientation or identity.

California

In 1986, screenwriter, director and producer Colin Higgins established the Colin Higgins Foundation. It continues to honor his vision by addressing the issues that concerned him. In addition to its grant-making activities, the Foundation annually awards the Colin Higgins Youth Courage Awards for bravery in the face of discrimination, intolerance and bigotry based on sexual orientation and/or gender.

Horizons Foundation is a community foundation dedicated to strengthening the LGBT community, building the organizations that serve LGBT people, and working towards a world in which diversity is valued and anti-LGBT discrimination does not exist.

Horizons exists both to meet the urgent needs of LGBT people and those living with HIV/AIDS today – and to assure our community's capacity to meet the needs of the community for many years in the future.

Minnesota

More than 90 percent of PFund’s funding comes from people like you — people who care about creating communities in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest where GLBT people are celebrated and live free. Every year, our valued donors contribute to Philanthrofund in exciting and innovative ways.

Your financial gift helps PFund achieve its key goals of inspiring giving, providing grants and scholarships and supporting the development of current and future leaders. If you’re interested in supporting this important work, we offer a wide range of donation methods from which to choose.

New York

Inspired by the legacy of Frederick Douglass, the North Star Fund is one of New York City ’s leading community foundations. Dedicated to building a permanent financial and institutional base for social change, North Star takes its name from the abolitionist newspaper founded in 1847 by Douglass.

By organizing donors, raising money for grants, and providing technical assistance, we seek to support activism that addresses both the root causes and visible manifestations of poverty, racism, homophobia and gender discrimination.

Since our founding in 1979, North Star has distributed over 23.5 million dollars to 1,500 groups working to ensure a more equitable and democratic city for all New Yorkers. From kitchen table activists to national coalitions, North Star’s courageous grantees have led efforts on issues ranging from better schools, housing and health care, to protecting civil liberties, stopping domestic violence, creating living wage jobs, and advocating for peace, freedom and human rights.

Unlike most foundations, North Star does not have a large endowment. Each year, we raise most of our grant money from a diverse network of individuals, families and businesses – New Yorkers like you – who give whatever they can to support their neighbors so that all of us can live in a more just society.

Vermont

WELCOME TO SAMARA

What will the future hold for Vermont’s LGBT citizens?

None of us likes to contemplate it, but one thing is certain:

there will come a time when we won't be around

to write a check, march in a rally, work,

volunteer at an LGBT organization,

or even cast a vote.

How then, can we perpetuate our values?

Samara can help:

  • If you are affiliated with a non-profit organization that benefits the LGBT community in some way, we can provide grant money, technical assistance, and other professional services. We can help you grow and change to ensure your mission is sustained over time.
  • If you are an individual with charitable intent, we can assist you in supporting LGBT causes and organizations both now and in the future.

Washington

As a funder for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in the Northwest, one donation to the Pride Foundation helps many different types of organizations working to bring equality and improve lives in our community.
